Friday, June 8 – Day 3: Leisure or optional PETRA excursion

After breakfast, we will enjoy a day at leisure. For those who registered on the Petra excursion (additional cost), we will be transferred in the early morning to the Israel/Jordanian border. After visa proceedings at the Jordanian Border, we will drive straight to Petra through desert highways. Our ultimate destination is the astonishing rose-red city of Petra which was built by the Nabateans (an early Arab tribe). Petra was renowned for its massive architectures, pools, dams and water channels. Petra is the legacy of the Nabateans who settled in the South of Jordan more than 2000 years ago. The visit begins with a short horseback ride, about 700m, until the entrance of the Siq, which is about 1.2 Km long (walking distance). There is also a possibility to rent a chariot (extra) to get inside Petra and back to the gate outside. Petra is famous for its huge monuments such as The Treasury, Royal Tombs, the Court, Roman Theater, Roman Street, Qassier Rl-Bint (Palace of Pharaoh’s daughter) and many other smaller monuments which fascinate visitors. The city itself is almost 45 Square Km and is considered to be the second wonder of the world. After the visit, we will enjoy lunch in a nice restaurant, followed by a drive back to the border. En route, we will stop for a short visit in Aqaba, with possibility for a short walk in the town. Transfer to border and cross back to Eilat. Enjoy dinner at our hotel.

Saturday, June 9 – Day 4: Eilat to the Dead Sea area

After breakfast, we will leave our hotel in Eilat and drive north towards the Dead Sea. On our way, we will drive north to Timna Park to see a life-size replica of the biblical tabernacle. While no original materials (e.g., gold, silver, bronze) have been used, the model is accurate in every other way based upon the biblical description. As we get closer to the shores of the Dead Sea, we will start to descend to the lowest point on the surface of the earth at 1305 feet (398m) below sea level. Continue north along the Dead Sea shores to the Legendary Plateau of Masada. We will ascend by cable car to the ancient synagogue and to explore the ancient fortress. This was the story, of the last stronghold of the Jewish Zealots in their struggle against the Romans. The Zealots held out for three years against the legions of Flavius Silva and chose to die as free men at their own hands in preference to Roman slavery. From the top of Masada, the outlines of the Roman encampments are still visible below. We will continue with a short drive to Ein Gedi. Enjoy a short hike to an oasis in the desert and see the gardens and waterfalls, as well as caves above. Here, Ein Gedi is the place, where David hid from King Saul and where he enjoyed praying to God in many occasions. It is also believed to be the place where David wrote the Book of Psalms. We will return south to the Dead Sea resort of Ein Bokek and to our hotel for check in. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Take advantage of the many facilities of the hotel, including floating on the Dead Sea. Additional spa services are available at the hotel. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner at our hotel.

Wednesday, June 13 – Day 8: Jerusalem and Hebron

After breakfast, we will start at City of David to visit the breathtaking observation point overlooking Biblical Jerusalem, dating back 3,800 years in time to the days of Abraham, when the first foundations of the city were laid. Continue to Israel Museum to see the model city of Jerusalem as it used to look like in 66 CE. In that fateful year, the Great Revolt against the Romans erupted, resulting in the destruction of the city and the Temple.
